Uruguay opposition claims victory in presidential vote, official candidate concedes
Amman, With the official vote count almost finished, the governing party candidate in Uruguay’s presidential election has conceded defeat.
In a tweet, Daniel Martinez of the Broad Front coalition referred to his conservative rival, Luis Lacalle Pou, as the president-elect.
The preliminary election result was so close that the electoral court said it would take until Friday to announce the final result.
Lacalle will take power on 1 March.
His victory will usher in a conservative government after 15 years of rule by the left-wing Broad Front.
