Ministry denies firing public university presidents

Amman, The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research Saturday dismissed as “entirely untrue” news website reports that Prime Minister Omar Razzaz had asked the Higher Education Minister to terminate the services of a number of presidents of public universities.

It said in a statement that the evaluation of university presidents is to guarantee quality and achieve higher education goals, stressing that the Higher Education Council had no prior intentions to fire any heads of public universities, which “is only governed by the evaluation results based on criteria accredited by the ministry.”

The evaluation came upon a council decision as a key part of a periodic appraisal process of the administrative process in Jordanian higher education institutions, which was called for by His Majesty the King’s Discussion Papers and stipulated in the key goals of the national strategy for human resources development, 2016-2025.

The statement stressed the need to handle the issue “with utmost care and objectivity” as it directly affects the Kingdom’s higher education sector’s reputation.
