Lower House begins debating 2020 general state budget, independent public institutions budgets
The Lower House of Parliament, on Sunday, began debating the 2020 budget draft law and the budgets of independent public institutions.
In a session held on Sunday morning, chaired by House Speaker Atef Tarawneh, reporter of the House’s Financial Committee, Riyad Azzam, briefed the House on his committee’s report and key recommendations.
Azzam said the Financial Committee showed results of a study and an analysis of the general budget and government unit budgets’ figures for the fiscal year 2020.
He pointed out that the committee decided to reduce the total public spending in the general budget and budgets of government units “due to the importance of public revenue estimates, maintaining the estimated deficit levels in the budget and its ratio to gross domestic product, maintaining credit levels that do not put pressure on borrowing costs, and ensuring that no measures are taken to affect citizens’ standard of living.”
The House’s Financial Committee decided to reduce current expenditures in the public budget by JD49 million, reduce capital expenditures by JD157 million, and reduce current expenditures in government units’ budgets by JD14 million, as well as reducing capital expenditures in government unit budgets by JD11 million, according to Azzam.
