China grants 59 countries visa-free access to its resort island Hainan

Beijing, China’s announcement early on Wednesday that it would grant visa-free access to citizens from 59 countries to the tropical island of Hainan, in the country’s south, could boost its economic growth and tourism industry.

Citizens from the 59 countries including the UK, the US and Canada will be allowed visa-free stays from May 1, according to an announcement by the State Immigration Authority.

The tropical island has granted visa-free access for 15 days to nationals from 21 countries since 2000, but they had to travel in tour groups. The number of nationalities was increased to 26 in 2010.
