Italy’s Foreign Minister Criticizes Netanyahu Over Gaza Stance

Rome: Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on Tuesday called for a ceasefire and an end to massacres in Gaza and the Middle East. Tajani expressed concern over the actions taken by Israel, emphasizing the need for peace and stability in the region.

According to Jordan News Agency, Tajani told the Il Giornale that Israel’s government “long ago crossed the red line of a legitimate and proportionate response to the October 7 attack.” His remarks highlight growing international discontent with Israel’s current strategy in the region.

Tajani, who also serves as deputy prime minister, stated that Italy opposes the invasion of Gaza and the occupation of parts of the West Bank through settlements, as well as the attacks on Christians. He criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for “ignoring the demands of half the world on this issue,” suggesting a widespread call for a different approach.

When questioned about reports of Israel negotiating with Libya, Syria, and South Sudan to transfer Gaza residents to these countries, Tajani responded, “This is unacceptable.” He reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to the establishment of a Palestinian state, expressing readiness to deploy troops under a UN mission led by Arab states to support this goal.
