UN Security Council Unanimously Adopts Resolution on Peaceful Settlement of Disputes

Jeddah: On Tuesday unanimously adopted Resolution 2788, submitted by Pakistan, urging the peaceful resolution of conflicts worldwide.

According to Jordan News Agency, the resolution calls on all UN member states to make use of peaceful dispute settlement mechanisms as outlined in Article 33 of the UN Charter. These include negotiation, inquiry, mediation, conciliation, arbitration, judicial settlement, recourse to regional agencies or arrangements, or any other peaceful means of their own choosing.

The Council reaffirmed its role in recommending appropriate procedures or methods of settlement and emphasized that, as a general rule, legal disputes should be referred to the International Court of Justice in accordance with its Statute.

The resolution also encouraged regional and sub-regional organizations to strengthen their efforts in resolving conflicts peacefully, in line with the UN Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions. It further urged member states to support the role of these organizations and promote their collaboration with the United Nations.

Additionally, the resolution underscored the importance of integrating comprehensive approaches to peaceful dispute resolution, ensuring the full, equal, and meaningful participation of women, as well as meaningful youth engagement in conflict prevention and resolution efforts.
