Damascus: UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen has issued a strong condemnation of Israel’s ongoing military escalation in Syria, highlighting recent airstrikes as a significant concern.
According to Jordan News Agency, Pedersen expressed significant apprehension over continuous violations of the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement. He described these actions as “unacceptable,” cautioning that they could destabilize an already fragile environment, increase regional tensions, and hinder efforts toward de-escalation and achieving a long-term political transition as outlined in UN Security Council Resolution 2254 (2015).
Pedersen called on Israel to cease its violations and comply with international obligations, urging avoidance of any unilateral measures that might exacerbate the conflict.
Additionally, Pedersen emphasized the importance of all parties respecting Syria’s sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity. He stressed that constructive dialogue, along with strict adherence to international agreements and international law, is crucial for ensuring security in Syria and the surrounding region.
