Amman: Minister of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs Ayman Safadi met with UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres to discuss Jordan-UN cooperation, regional developments, and efforts to promote security and stability.
According to Jordan News Agency, the two sides reaffirmed the strong partnership between Jordan and the United Nations, emphasizing the need for continued coordination to address regional challenges. Safadi and Guterres reviewed the latest developments in the region, particularly the importance of upholding the ceasefire between the United States and Iran. They stressed the need for resuming negotiations aimed at reducing tensions and ensuring the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz in line with international law.
The meeting focused significantly on the occupied Palestinian territories. Safadi called for the implementation of all provisions of the Gaza plan announced by US President Donald Trump and urged Israel to lift restrictions that prevent the entry of sufficient humanitarian aid into the Strip. He highlighted the worsening humanitarian crisis in the area. Additionally, Safadi discussed the deteriorating situation in the occupied West Bank, warning that settlement expansion, settler violence, land confiscation, and attempts to alter the status quo at Jerusalem's holy sites could further destabilize the territory and undermine prospects for a just and lasting peace.
Safadi emphasized the need for coordinated regional and international action to ensure Israel's compliance with international law and international humanitarian law. Both sides called for supporting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to enable it to continue providing essential services to Palestinian refugees. Moreover, Safadi praised UN agencies for their humanitarian efforts in Gaza and their support for refugees.
The discussions also covered developments in Syria, with both parties reaffirming support for Syria's unity, sovereignty, security, and reconstruction. They called for an end to Israeli attacks on Syrian territory. Safadi commended Guterres' commitment to international law, international humanitarian law, and the two-state solution. In response, Guterres praised Jordan's humanitarian role in supporting Gaza and refugees and lauded the efforts of His Majesty King Abdullah II to advance regional peace and stability.
