Tropical Storm Idalia Moves through Carolinas after Damaging Florida, Georgia

Tropical Storm Idalia moved through South and North Carolina on its way out to the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday, leaving a trail of flooding and destruction in southern Georgia and Florida, where it first hit land as a major hurricane.

Rescue and repair efforts continued in the remote northern Florida area where Idalia made landfall Wednesday. Authorities so far have confirmed only one death, that of a man hit by a falling tree in Georgia.

The storm’s powerful winds left a half-million homes and businesses without electricity in Florida and other southeastern states as it ripped down power lines. Idalia also spawned short-lived tornadoes; one flipped a car in Goose Creek, South Carolina, causing minor injuries.
