The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is organizing a high-level dialogue session on the sidelines of the “Climate Week in the Middle East and North Africa 2023” to discuss reducing land degradation. Policymakers and specialists from relevant fields, business institutions, youth, and representatives of civil society organizations from the Middle East, North Africa, and worldwide will participate in the event titled “Global Assessment.”

The Climate Week program will review the progress made in implementing the Paris Agreement on climate change which will be a key focus in the region as part of the global assessment process during the Twenty-Eighth Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28). The program aims to promote diverse participation through various activities, including high-level ministerial meetings, CEO-level dialogues, technical side events, and workshops. These initiatives will facilitate communication, effective interaction, and the establishment of partnerships. As the host country, the Kingdom will showcase its efforts and initiatives through an exhibition.

Scheduled for October 10, 2023, the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture will organize a high-level dialogue session at Riyadh City Boulevard in Riyadh. This session, organized by the Ministry as part of the Climate Week program, will feature a distinguished group of Saudi and international speakers specializing in vegetation development and land rehabilitation. They will discuss several important topics, including the significance of global action to reduce land degradation and restore degraded lands, the impacts of land degradation on climate change, biodiversity, and food security, as well as Saudi Arabia’s efforts in land rehabilitation and degradation prevention.

Next year, the Kingdom will host several important international events related to the environment, including World Environment Day, which will focus on land reform and reducing the effects of drought. Also, the Kingdom will host the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention to Combat Desertification (COP16), the third session of the Arab Environment Forum, and the meeting of Arab ministers responsible for environmental affairs. This confirms the Kingdom’s leadership role locally, regionally, and internationally in preserving and protecting the environment and raising awareness to achieve sustainable development.
