House Speaker Ahmad Safadi Engages in High-Level Discussions at British House of Commons

London: During his formal visit to the British House of Commons, Ahmad Safadi, the Speaker of the Lower House, held a series of significant meetings in London.

According to Jordan News Agency, Safadi met with Lord Iain McNicol, the UK Trade Envoy to Jordan; Hamish Falconer, the Middle East Minister; Emily Thornberry, the Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee; Fabian Hamilton, the Chair of the British Parliamentary Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union; and Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi, the Chair of the Defense Committee. The discussions centered around Jordan’s efforts in promoting regional security and stability, modernization initiatives led by His Majesty King Abdullah II, and the Kingdom’s role in addressing conflicts and humanitarian issues.

In a meeting with Emily Thornberry, Safadi highlighted Jordan’s proactive measures to halt violence in Gaza and deliver immediate aid. He warned against the growing threat posed by Israeli actions, particularly in the West Bank, and emphasized the need for a comprehensive resolution to the Palestinian issue based on a two-state solution, as consistently advocated by King Abdullah II.

Safadi also reiterated the Jordanian people’s commitment to opposing relocation plans and protecting Jerusalem through the Hashemite custodianship of its holy sites. Discussions with Fabian Hamilton focused on the importance of joint coordination at Inter-Parliamentary Union meetings on issues such as the Middle East, Palestine, refugees, and countering extremism and terrorism. Safadi stressed the necessity of supporting civilians and addressing the challenges of asylum on Jordan.

Further, Safadi discussed with Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi the urgency of finding a just solution to the Palestinian cause to prevent regional chaos, in light of the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Dhesi acknowledged Jordan’s critical role in establishing regional stability and combating extremism, emphasizing the need for peace efforts.

In his meeting with Hamish Falconer, Safadi praised King Abdullah II’s leadership and Jordan’s stability, advocating for supportive parliamentary actions to provide aid to Gaza and support UNRWA. Safadi also engaged with Lord Iain McNicol to discuss enhancing economic cooperation and investment opportunities between Jordan and Britain, proposing the establishment of a Jordanian-British Business Forum.

Safadi’s visit included discussions with Lindsay Hoyle and John McFaul, the Speakers of the British House of Commons and House of Lords, respectively. They underscored the importance of the Jordanian-British relationship and the need for collaborative efforts to address the Gaza conflict and support the establishment of a Palestinian state, while emphasizing the two-state solution as vital for regional security.
