Foreign Ministry Engages in Middle East Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Talks

Amman: Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs, Ambassador Majed Qatarneh, participated in the meeting of the Working Group of the United Nations Conference on the Establishment of a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction in the Middle East, held in Amman for the first time outside the United Nations headquarters in New York.

According to Jordan News Agency, Qatarneh reaffirmed Jordan’s firm and consistent position on the establishment of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East. He emphasized that the initiative is not only a regional responsibility but also an international obligation that should be supported and implemented in line with the relevant United Nations resolutions.

Qatarneh reiterated the Kingdom’s full support for the United Nations Conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction. He also emphasized Jordan’s commitment to working in coordination with all participating states to achieve the common goals set forth by the conference.

The meeting in Amman is part of the preparations for the Sixth Session of the Conference, which was established under UN General Assembly Resolution 73/546 in 2018. Notably, the first session of the conference was held under Jordanian presidency in 2019.
