DPA and UNRWA Address Critical Service Challenges in Jordan’s Refugee Camps

Amman: Director General of the Department of Palestinian Affairs (DPA), Rafiq Khirfan, and Director of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Olaf Becker, met to address various issues impacting services in Jordan’s refugee camps, with a focus on financial constraints affecting UNRWA’s operations.

According to Jordan News Agency, Khirfan emphasized the importance of sustained international support to maintain essential educational, health, and relief services. The meeting on Tuesday also included discussions on preparations for the upcoming academic year, highlighting the necessity of securing educational and logistical staff in advance to ensure a smooth start for students in UNRWA schools.

Khirfan and Becker explored steps to enhance international engagement by organizing delegation visits to the camps. These visits aim to provide a closer inspection of the services and needs of refugees, which could help garner additional support and assistance.

On the topic of field services, both parties agreed on the urgent need to enhance cleanliness in the refugee camps by increasing the number of workers and implementing an evening shift system. This initiative aims to maintain sustainable cleanliness and improve the health conditions for camp residents.

The meeting concluded with a mutual agreement on the importance of coordinating joint field visits. These visits are intended to directly assess needs and oversee the implementation of various projects and services.
