Aqaba: Following complaints that ink was spilling into bread, potentially endangering public health, officials in the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) and the Aqaba Governorate have banned bakers from using printed paper bags.
According to Jordan News Agency, the ASEZA’s administration released a statement indicating that the decision was made under the directive of Environment Commissioner Ayman Suleiman, in coordination with Aqaba Governor Khaled Al-Hajaj. This measure was undertaken as a precaution to protect public health and safety.
The statement further explained that a local organization, in collaboration with the ASEZA, had distributed printed paper bags to several bakeries throughout the city as part of an environmentally motivated initiative. The complaint, which was the first the authority had received, led to an immediate halt in distribution and the recall of all bags that had previously been provided.
Authorities also noted that in the future, stamps will replace printed logos on paper bags. This marks a shift from the previous practice of printing directly on the bags, which was deemed acceptable under public safety guidelines.
