Aqaba Authority Engages in Strategic Discussions at Brussels Meeting

Brussels: The Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) participated in the fourth meeting of the Follow-up Committee of the Interreg NEXT MED Regional Cooperation Program, recently held in Brussels. The meeting aimed to discuss the future of development and environmental projects while strengthening regional cooperation in sustainable development.

According to Jordan News Agency, a statement released by ASEZA on Monday highlighted comments from Commissioner for Environment and Public Safety Nidal Awran. Awran emphasized that Jordan's involvement showcases its ongoing commitment to enhancing regional and international cooperation in environmental and sustainable development fields. He also pointed out Jordan's aim to expand engagement in initiatives that support the green economy and efficient management of natural resources.

Awran further noted that Jordan stands to benefit from 29 out of 49 projects shortlisted under the program's second call for proposals. Notably, Jordan will lead four projects as the principal partner, responsible for coordination and technical and financial management. Additionally, Jordan will serve as an implementing partner in 25 regional projects involving Mediterranean countries, with a collective budget exceeding 10 million euros.

The commissioner stressed that participation in the meeting is crucial for exchanging expertise and building strategic partnerships with participating countries and institutions. This collaboration is expected to contribute significantly to the implementation of development and environmental projects with a tangible regional impact.

Awran also highlighted Jordan's continued efforts in adopting pioneering environmental initiatives. These initiatives aim to address shared environmental challenges and advance the Sustainable Development Goals through cooperation with regional and international partners.

During the meeting, several key issues were reviewed, including the monitoring of program implementation and the approval of projects submitted under the second call for proposals. The focus remained on supporting the green transition in Mediterranean countries, alongside outlining the framework for the third call for proposals and discussing the program's future direction for 2028-2034.

ASEZA also noted its role since 2010 as the host of the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office of the Regional Cooperation Program for the Mediterranean Basin. This role is seen as a reflection of international confidence in ASEZA's capacity as a regional hub supporting cooperation and sustainable development initiatives.
