UN Humanitarian Chief Leads Diplomatic Mission to West Bank to Assess Settler Violence

Amman: The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Ramiz Alakbarov, led a diplomatic delegation representing 11 member states on a field visit to the West Bank on Monday. The mission sought to examine the humanitarian impacts of demolitions, forced displacement, water access restrictions, and settler violence in the region.

According to Jordan News Agency, Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the United Nations, highlighted that the West Bank has witnessed a significant escalation in these crises recently. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that the delegation engaged with affected Palestinians in the northern Jordan Valley communities of Ein al-Beida and Al-Hadidiyah. The diplomats also visited Hammamat al-Maleh, one of 45 communities completely displaced since 2023 due to settler violence and restricted access to water.

During the tour, the delegation assessed abandoned homes, a demolished donor-funded school, and water wells seized by Israeli settlers. They listened to testimonies from Palestinian herders who described frequent attacks, demolitions, and restrictions on accessing their traditional grazing lands.

Alakbarov urged for international solidarity and partnerships to support populations whose lives and livelihoods are threatened. He emphasized the importance of assisting vulnerable groups to remain in their areas and stressed the necessity of holding those responsible for violence, demolitions, and the illegal use of natural resources accountable.
