Irbid: Minister of Government Communication Mohammad Momani announced a series of Cabinet decisions following a meeting held Sunday in Irbid, chaired by Prime Minister Jafar Hassan. At a post-meeting press conference, Momani detailed multiple initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, energy, and investment sectors across the governorate.
According to Jordan News Agency, the Cabinet approved funding for the maintenance of the Ramtha-Forty Street road, a significant route in the region, responding to local representatives' requests. Additionally, a committee led by the Minister of Transport will be formed to assess transportation options connecting Irbid's districts with industrial and development zones, facilitating worker access. Funding for these initiatives could come from public investment or government support.
The Prime Minister also called for a review of tax and customs exemptions, with recommendations expected to alleviate pressures on businesses and taxpayers. In the transport sector, regulatory amendments for 2026 were approved, impacting vehicle registration, license plates, and driver licensing fees. These changes include a more simplified vehicle registration renewal process and indefinite fee exemptions for relinquishing paid plate numbers.
As part of energy security and sustainability efforts, the Cabinet endorsed the updated Energy Sector Strategy (2025-2035), which aims to increase domestic energy reliance and raise renewable energy usage to 50% by 2035. Noteworthy projects include the development of the Risha gas field, expansion of gas supplies to Amman and Zarqa, and upgrading an oil refinery. The strategy also emphasizes improving energy efficiency and supporting hydrogen production and electric vehicle use.
In a significant investment move, a $1 billion agreement was approved between the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Jordan Green Ammonia Company to establish a green hydrogen and ammonia production facility in Aqaba, projected to begin operations in 2030. This initiative aims to produce around 100,000 tons annually, positioning Aqaba as a clean energy export hub.
To stabilize petroleum derivative prices amid global increases, temporary exemptions for marketing companies from unified fees were approved, effective until the year's end. Additionally, the government endorsed a plan to reform sectoral licensing systems to streamline processes, reduce regulatory burdens, and boost investor confidence, introducing a risk-based regulatory approach and automatic application approval processes.
The Cabinet also approved a memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship and a U.S.-based technology firm in Maryland to foster innovation collaboration and attract investment into Jordan's tech sector.
Momani highlighted key development projects in Irbid, including infrastructure upgrades around Princess Basma Hospital, the establishment of a cancer treatment center, completion of the governorate's ring road, and plans to convert the old Irbid Hospital into a comprehensive health center. He emphasized the government's commitment to engaging with local communities and improving development outcomes, while reiterating Jordan's dedication to press freedom on World Press Freedom Day.
