‘Open’ Trade Flow with Syria to Enhance Economic Exchanges, Says AOCTC Head

Amman: Head of the Association of Owners of Clearance and Transport Companies (AOCTC) Deifallah Abu Aqouleh highlighted the significance of the agreement between Jordan and Syria to open import and export channels for all goods, based on reciprocity, from the beginning of next year. Abu Aqouleh emphasized that this initiative will boost bilateral trade and broaden opportunities for both nations’ public and private sectors.

According to Jordan News Agency, during discussions in Damascus, Jordanian Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply, Ya’rub Qudah, and his Syrian counterpart, Minister of Economy and Industry, Dr. Nidal Shaar, agreed to the opening of import and export channels between the two countries for all goods starting next year. This move is expected to increase trade volume and provide opportunities for both countries’ sectors.

In a statement, Abu Aqouleh described the resumption of unrestricted import and export activities between Jordan and Syria as a significant development, poised to increase the flow of goods and boost trade activity. He noted that this agreement would positively impact companies in customs clearance and transportation, as well as sectors linked to foreign trade.

Abu Aqouleh emphasized that active mutual trade will give the logistics sector a strong boost, particularly because customs clearance and transportation operations are directly tied to trade volume. He mentioned that increased demand for these services will lead to higher employment rates and increased workloads at customs centers.

The discussions in Damascus between the two ministers laid a foundation for strengthening economic cooperation, especially after the agreement to lift previous restrictions and allow the trade of all goods. This is expected to enhance trade confidence and revitalize bilateral economic relations. Additionally, activating the free trade agreement, revitalizing the joint free zone, and streamlining customs procedures will support this new phase of cooperation.

He called for ongoing improvements to the logistics environment and infrastructure to ensure optimal benefits from trade liberalization. He noted that Jordan has consistently supported the passage of Syrian goods and trucks, highlighting the Kingdom’s customs clearance and transport sector’s capacity to serve as a key logistics hub in Syria’s reconstruction efforts.

Abu Aqouleh concluded that strengthened trade between Jordan and Syria presents a significant opportunity to advance the logistics sector and increase its competitiveness, underlining the importance of overcoming obstacles and streamlining procedures to benefit joint economic interests.
