4.5 magnitude earthquake hits southwest of Turkey

A magnitude-4.5 earthquake early Sunday struck the Aegean Sea off the province of Mugla, southwest of Turkey, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

The Anadolu Agency quoted the AFAD as saying that the tremor, reported at around 7.31 a.m local time, hit the area 44.9 km from Datca district at a depth of 6.74km.

Noteworthy, Turkey is a seismically active area within the complex zone of collision between the Eurasian Plate and both the African and Arabian Plates. More than 20,000 people died in the most powerful earthquakes that struck the northwest of the country in 1999.
