Amman: General Manager of the Yarmouk Water Company, Ghislain Juvanon, met with a German delegation to discuss cooperation and support for priority water and wastewater projects aimed at enhancing infrastructure and service efficiency in northern governorates.
According to Jordan News Agency, the German delegation included Laura Schnettler, Development Cooperation Representative from the German Embassy in Amman, Nicolas von Kalm, Country Desk Officer at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and representatives from the German Development Bank (KfW), the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), and the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR). Juvanon highlighted the company's operational and institutional challenges, along with its financing needs for water and wastewater infrastructure projects.
Juvanon emphasized the significance of directing support towards priority projects to improve operational efficiency, service reliability, and ensure sustainable water services in northern Jordan. He noted that partnerships with German institutions are crucial for advancing strategic projects and addressing water scarcity.
Ahmad Awamleh, Yarmouk Water Company Management Contract Director, highlighted the importance of coordinating with donors and international institutions, particularly Germany's water-sector partners, to mobilize funding for priority projects. Awamleh reviewed the outcomes of the company's management contract, which aligns with the Economic Modernization Vision and the National Water Strategy 2023-2040.
The discussions also included securing a £15 million grant to finance projects that would enhance infrastructure and the efficiency of water and wastewater systems. Nicolas von Kalm of BMZ expressed that the dialogue with Yarmouk Water Company provides insights into the priorities and challenges of the water sector in northern Jordan. He praised the company's development plans and emphasized the need for tangible improvements in operational efficiency and service sustainability.
The delegation visited the Wadi Al Arab Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Wadi Al Arab Hydropower Station, where they were briefed on water management operations, groundwater management, and energy projects linked to the water sector.
