Beirut: Deputy US presidential special envoy to the Middle East Morgan Ortagus held a series of meetings in Beirut on Saturday, engaging with Lebanese President General Joseph Aoun, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri.
According to Jordan News Agency, the discussions are a part of Washington’s ongoing efforts to ensure the implementation of UN Resolution 1701 and to facilitate the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied Lebanese territories. The talks focused on the situation in southern Lebanon, the mission of the international monitoring committee, the security conditions on the Lebanese-Syrian border, and the coordination of security efforts between the involved parties, as stated by the Lebanese presidency.
Further, the Prime Minister’s Office highlighted that the discussions included measures undertaken by the Lebanese army to adhere to Resolution 1701 and the associated security arrangements. The emphasis was placed on the necessity of completing the Israeli withdrawal from all Lebanese territories.
These diplomatic engagements occurred amidst heightened tensions in South Lebanon. Recent incidents have seen the Israeli army firing a mortar shell on the border town of Kfar Kila, and drones deploying sound bombs in the area, causing unrest among the local population.
