UNICEF Chief Urges Israel to Safeguard Civilians Amid Rising Tensions

Amman: UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell on Monday urged Israel to review its rules of engagement in Gaza following the killing of seven children who were waiting in line at a water distribution point. The incident has highlighted the urgent need for measures that prioritize the safety and protection of civilians in conflict zones.

According to Jordan News Agency, the tragic event involving the children comes just days after other women and children were killed while queuing for food aid. Russell emphasized the necessity for Israeli authorities to ensure full compliance with international humanitarian law, specifically the obligation to protect civilians, including children, during military operations.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has expressed its concerns through a post on X, stating that “trucks loaded with food and medical supplies are waiting in warehouses” outside Gaza. The agency has called for an end to the starvation of civilians, the lifting of the blockade, and the need for unhindered access to carry out its life-saving operations.
