Amman: The UN Security Council has adopted Resolution 2805 focused on reviewing and strengthening the peacebuilding architecture, a move mirrored by an identical text approved by the General Assembly. This joint decision marks a significant step towards enhancing the framework for peacebuilding efforts worldwide.
According to Jordan News Agency, the resolutions introduce notable institutional developments, such as the establishment of an annual program of work for the Peacebuilding Commission and the inauguration of a “Peacebuilding Week” slated for next June. These initiatives aim to create a more structured and predictable schedule for the Commission, aligning its activities with those of the General Assembly, the Security Council, and the Economic and Social Council. This alignment reaffirms the Commission’s role as a crucial platform for assisting Member States in their peacebuilding endeavors.
The recent resolutions build on the foundations set in 2005 when the General Assembly and the Security Council concurrently decided to establish the Peacebuilding Commission and the Peacebuilding Support Office, alongside a request for the Secretary-General to create the Peacebuilding Fund. This historical context underscores the ongoing commitment of the United Nations to strengthen and refine its peacebuilding mechanisms.
The adoption of these resolutions facilitates the development of a cohesive framework that supports peacebuilding efforts across the UN’s development, human rights, and peace and security pillars.
