UN Secretary-General Warns Rafah Attack Would be Humanitarian Catastrophe

Washington, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the assault on Rafah would be a humanitarian catastrophe with dire consequences, a strategic mistake, a political calamity, and a humanitarian nightmare.

Speaking to reporters today at UN headquarters in New York City, the secretary-general stressed that the large-scale attack on Rafah would be a humanitarian catastrophe and would lead to countless civilian casualties, forcing large numbers of families to flee again with no safe place to go, given that there is no safe place in the Gaza Strip.

He expressed alarm at the renewed Israeli military activities in Rafah and said that the closure of the Rafah and Karem Abu Salem crossings harmed the difficult humanitarian situation, calling for their immediate re-opening. He gave an example by saying that the fuel available for humanitarian operations in Gaza will run out today.
