New York: The United Nations has announced that it will not be altering the mandate of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), as confirmed by UN spokesperson St©phane Dujarric. This statement comes in light of ongoing discussions surrounding a “strategic review” of the agency.
According to Jordan News Agency, the strategic review will be led by British expert Ian Martin. Dujarric addressed reporters’ inquiries by emphasizing that the review does not target UNRWA’s core mission. He highlighted the agency’s operational challenges, which include financial constraints and security issues in regions such as Gaza, the occupied West Bank, and during conflicts in Syria and Lebanon.
Dujarric reiterated that the mandate of UNRWA, sanctioned by the United Nations General Assembly, remains unchanged. He clarified that the aim of the review is to evaluate how the agency can most effectively support Palestinian refugees and their communities amid the intricate circumstances they face.
