UN Chief Urges Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza, Calls for Political Solution Based on International Law

Amman: United Nations Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres on Monday called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, urging that it be followed by a political solution grounded in the UN Charter, international law, and relevant UN resolutions.

According to Jordan News Agency, Guterres addressed reporters at UN headquarters, expressing deep concern over the “unprecedented level of death and destruction” in Gaza. He highlighted that the ongoing conflict is eroding the basic principles of human dignity for Gaza’s population and labeled the current situation as “horrific.”

Guterres expressed a strong desire for the involved parties to overcome existing hurdles to achieve a ceasefire but underscored that merely halting the violence is inadequate. He insisted, “A ceasefire must lead to a solution,” indicating the necessity for a broader resolution to ensure lasting peace.

The Secretary-General emphasized that lasting peace is contingent upon both Palestinians and Israelis being able to live in states where they can fully exercise their rights. To this end, Guterres announced that the UN is organizing a conference later in the month focused on the two-state solution, seeking to address the underlying issues and contradictions with international law. He remarked on the plight of five million people living without rights in their homeland as a glaring violation of human principles and international statutes.
