UN Chief Appoints Ian Martin to Oversee Strategic Review of UNRWA

Amman: United Nations Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres on Tuesday appointed Ian Martin of the United Kingdom to lead a strategic review of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) as part of his “UN80” initiative aimed at modernizing the UN and enhancing its effectiveness in tackling 21st-century challenges.

According to Jordan News Agency, Guterres tasked Martin with conducting a strategic assessment of UNRWA’s impact and its ability to implement its mandate amid current political, financial, and security constraints, as well as other obstacles. The review will also consider the consequences and risks for Palestinian refugees.

Martin has also been mandated to identify potential courses of action for UN member states and/or the UN itself, taking into account relevant mandates issued by the General Assembly and the Security Council.
