UK envoy visits Karak

UK’s Ambassador to Jordan, Bridget Brind, on Sunday visited the southern Governorate of Karak, and met with its Governor, Mohammad Al-Fayez.

In the meeting, Brind and Al-Fayez lauded existing ties and cooperation between Jordan and the United Kingdom.

Brind was briefed on the impact of a UK-funded program in Karak, which supports teacher training and enhances the education system.

Ambassador Brind also visited a primary school in the Qaabah al-Karak district, which is benefiting from the UK’s support to Jordanian public schools through the Early Grade Reading and Arithmetic Program. This program also includes remedial education, and provides essential support to both Jordanian and refugee students in restituting what they have missed out on learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Jordanian public schools are working hard to support both Jordanian and refugee children to catch up with learning, after schools were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I am pleased to see how this UK-supported program is providing remedial support to teachers and young children in schools in Karak to improve basic skills in reading and arithmetic,” Ambassador Brind said.

Brind also met with youth representatives to listen to the younger generation’s views and aspirations, noting that the United Kingdom realizes the importance of the role of youth, women and men in building dynamic, prosperous and resilient societies. She also encouraged everyone she met to be empowered and engaged citizens and productive members of society.

She also met with women entrepreneurs at the Center for Business Development, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting sustainable socio-economic development through employment and entrepreneurship programs.

In the meeting, the UK Ambassador spoke about her experience as the first British ambassador to Jordan, and lauded the steadfastness, creativity and ambition of female entrepreneurs in Karak, who worked to develop their businesses throughout the governorate.

The ambassador also highlighted the vital role that women entrepreneurs, the private sector, and women play in contributing to economic growth and providing jobs that Jordan needs to achieve a more prosperous future.
