Amman: The Department of Statistics (DoS) recently participated in a national workshop focusing on climate change and disaster-related statistics. The workshop was organized by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), the United Nations Disaster Risk Reduction Organization (UNDRR), and the United Nations Statistics Division.
According to Jordan News Agency, the department emphasized that the three-day workshop was a crucial step in enhancing statistical capabilities to align with global advancements in climate change and disaster management. Haidar Freihat, Director General of the Department, highlighted the significance of the workshop, noting that it comes at a pivotal time as the department gears up for the 2025 General Population and Housing Census. This census aims to provide a comprehensive database to track population movements resulting from disasters.
Freihat also emphasized the role of the National Interactive Center
, which will operate as an advanced platform for data users. This platform will provide access to information on climate change and disaster statistics, encompassing data on evacuated populations, internally and internationally displaced persons, resettled populations, and returnees. Additionally, it will feature geographic information system (GIS) mapping of areas most vulnerable to disasters and climate change, and track deaths from natural and man-made disasters.
He further noted the department’s continuous efforts to enhance statistical capabilities and adapt to national updates, with the aim of improving data quality. This endeavor is vital for monitoring and achieving the sustainable development goals, particularly Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and Goal 13 (Climate Action).
