Seoul: South Korea has detected a highly pathogenic avian influenza case in the southwestern province of Gyeonggi, according to officials on Friday. The H5 bird flu was discovered at a laying hen farm in Pyeongtaek, 50 kilometers (31 miles) south of Seoul, said the Central Disaster Management Headquarters (CDMH), cited by Yonhap News.
According to Anadolu Agency, a response team was dispatched to the farm to implement quarantine measures, including restricting access, culling, and conducting an epidemiological assessment. A nationwide 36-hour temporary ban was also issued on the movement of all hen farms, including related livestock facilities and transport vehicles.
The public was urged to avoid areas frequented by migratory birds suspected of carrying the virus and to strictly follow quarantine guidelines. South Korea confirmed its first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza in 2025 in September.
