Senate head, Iraq parliamentary speaker discuss ties

Senate President Faisal Al-Fayez and visiting Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mohammad Al-Halbousi held talks Tuesday on ways to cement Jordanian-Iraqi ties, the current situation in the region and promoting joint parliamentary cooperation.

“We in Jordan take pride in the high level of relations between our two brotherly countries in the various fields, as our relations are historically solid and are based on mutual respect,” Al-Fayez said, adding that Jordan is keen on strengthening relations to be a model for joint Arab action.

He stressed the importance of close cooperation, especially in political and economic fields, and validating signed agreements, emphasizing coordination between the two countries, particularly in the fight against terrorism and extremism.

Jordan, the Senate head said, believes that Iraq’s security and stability is a Jordanian interest, and that the Kingdom rejects interference in the internal affairs of its neighbour and supports its territorial unity.

He said that a recent summit in Baghdad between His Majesty King Abdullah II, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, and Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhemi is “an advanced step towards boosting joint cooperation and partnerships to overcome challenges and achieve strategic integration between the three countries.”

On regional conflicts, Al-Fayez called on the international community to assume its moral and humanitarian responsibility to end the Syrian crisis and solve the Palestinian issue “to enable the peoples of the region to live in security and stability.”

He reiterated that a solution to all regional conflicts hinged on finding a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue according to the international legitimacy resolutions and the two-state solution that enables the Palestinian people to realize their right to establish their independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

For his part, the head of the Iraqi parliament said that his country valued Jordan’s positions in support of Iraq and its efforts to combat terrorism and restore security on all of Iraqi lands.
