Senate endorses budget bill as passed by Lower House

The Senate on Tuesday endorsed the draft state budget law for the fiscal year 2023 as passed by the Lower House.

In a session chaired by President Faisal Fayez and attended by cabinet members, the Senators also approved 64 recommendations by the financial and economic committee after listening to the government’s response to their observations from Finance Minister Mohammad Al-Ississ.

Eight Senators addressed the chamber during today’s debate, calling for cutting spending, addressing public debt, alleviating poverty and unemployment, coming up with a clear economic stimulation strategy through reviewing taxes, developing the investment environment, promoting exports and financing small enterprises.

The Senators also urged better public services, supporting the armed forces and security services, revamping public administration as well as enhancing the tourism, agriculture, industry, health and information technology sectors, promoting vocational and technical education and addressing the energy and electricity sector while forging ahead with modernization along the political, economic and administrative tracks.

The Senate chief reiterated that the chamber will fully cooperate with the government and national institutions to address challenges and pursue national reforms, stressing the need to improve the living conditions of citizens and enhance the various sectors and exports and achieve national food security.

The Senators also thanked Gulf Arab countries for their support of Jordan’s economy.
