The Senate’s Culture, Youth and Sports Committee, headed by Bassam Haddadin, called on forming a Higher Council for Culture and Arts.
During a meeting held Sunday, in the presence of the Minister of Culture, Haifa Najjar, Haddadin said this projected council is established in most countries worldwide and its mission is to orchestrate nation-level efforts, civil society organizations and relevant authorities to develop culture and arts of all kinds.
Culture and arts in all their forms and types, in addition to activities to entrench values of democratic national culture and activate cultural centers in the Kingdom’s governorates are a “perquisite for civilized development and progress to keep pace with the new era,” Haddadin pointed out.
Najjar, for her part, welcomed the idea of establishing a higher council for culture and arts, stressing the possibility of discussing ways to implement the proposal at the Council of Ministers, and developing legislation to work within a national cultural project.
The ministry, Najjar noted, takes the idea of establishing the council “seriously,” as a national demand, noting the importance of networking and building “true” partnerships with relevant authorities to enhance the concept of citizenship and productivity and deepen the sense of national responsibility.
Meanwhile, the committee’s members called on Ministry of Culture to enhance coordination with concerned authorities to raise youth cultural awareness, focus on Jordan’s culture and revive role of cultural centers countrywide.
To further enhance future performance, the senators stressed the need to provide financial support for the ministry’s budget to carry out its cultural role.
