Safadi, Russian counterpart discuss escalation in Palestinian territories

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi, on Thursday, along with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed efforts aiming at halting the escalation in holy city of Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip and the Palestinian territories.

In a phone call, the two top diplomats reviewed preparations for holding the Security Council session that will be held tomorrow to discuss the severe situation in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The Israeli aggressions, the illegal measures, and the violations in the occupied Palestinian territories should come to an end, the two ministers stressed.

Israel, as an occupying power, must abide by its obligations and fully respect Jerusalem’s status quo, Safadi stressed during the phone call with Lavrov.

He stressed that security and stability can only be achieved with the ending of the Israeli occupation, which necessitates making every effort to re-launch an effective and real peace process to reach the two-state solution in accordance with international law.

The two ministers also stressed the need of the resumption of the international quartet’s meetings.
