Red Cross and PSD Address Overcrowding in Jordanian Correctional Centers

Amman: The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), in partnership with the Public Security Department (PSD), convened a dialogue session on Tuesday to address the pressing issue of overcrowding in correctional and rehabilitation centers across Jordan.

According to Jordan News Agency, PSD Director General Major General Obaidallah Maaytah emphasized the significance of the meeting, highlighting the need for effective solutions to alleviate overcrowding and improve the incarceration environment. He underscored Jordan’s commitment to implementing international human rights standards as part of its correctional approach, aiming to uphold human rights and dignity.

The PSD has been actively working to evolve its philosophy of correction and rehabilitation. Through various programs, the department aims to create a humane environment that encourages inmates to change their behavior and reintegrate into society as contributing members.

Major General Maaytah pointed out that overcrowding is a global issue that demands innovative legal and administrative strategies. He stressed the importance of collaboration among all relevant bodies to maintain health, security, and social care standards in correctional centers, overcoming challenges faced by penal institutions worldwide.

Brigadier Falah Al-Majali, from the Department of Correctional and Rehabilitation Centers, noted that the session is a result of a strong partnership and shared belief in the criminal justice system in Jordan. The focus is on developing practical recommendations to enhance societal peace and ensure justice and humanity.

Sarah Avrillaud, Head of Delegation for the ICRC, praised Jordan’s efforts in safeguarding human rights and ensuring a safe environment in detention centers. She acknowledged the PSD’s dedication to improving inmate services and addressing the issue of overcrowding.
