Quinn to visit Jordan to check on disabled people’s situation-Foreign Ministry

Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Gerard Quinn, is scheduled to start an official visit to Jordan on Monday, which will continue until September 15, to monitor and assess the Kingdom’s human rights situation for persons with disabilities.

According to a statement released by Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates on Sunday, the visit aims to review legislation, policies and practices related to protection of disabled people’s rights and extent to which national laws align with relevant international conventions.

The visit, which comes at invitation of Jordan’s government, also eyes to conduct multiple field interviews and tours to learn about the gov’t’s efforts in empowering and integrating disabled people and monitoring achievements in this regard, the statement added.

The statement noted Quinn will also hold talks with government officials, national institutions and relevant civil society organizations, as well as representatives of specialized United Nations agencies operating in the Kingdom.

In this context, Jordan’s concerned authorities will provide data and actions taken on the ground, which aim to reflect the clear situation of services provided to disabled persons and measures to protect their rights.
