Quinn checks on services provided to inured military servicemen

Director General of Hashemite Commission for Disabled Soldiers (HCDS), retired Brig. Gen. Moran Turk, on Wednesday received Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Gerard Quinn, and his accompanying delegation.

During the meeting, Quinn was briefed on HCDS’s development, since its establishment as a Hashemite charitable association for military servicemen with special needs.

Turk said HCDS is tasked with providing care for and rehabilitating the retired and active military disabled personnel, who have been exposed to accidents or contracted diseases that resulted in permanent or temporary disability.

HCDS spares no effort in providing the “best” services to the injured military personnel by implementing many plans and programs, in partnership with various official and private institutions, he pointed out.

For his part, Quinn said his visit aims to review situation of persons with disabilities in Jordan, to highlight progress made in promoting and protecting their rights in related legislation, policies, programs and practices and provide recommendations to enhance government efforts to provide comprehensive solutions for persons with disabilities.

Touring the HCDS’s various facilities, Quinn and his accompanying delegation were briefed from service providers for military casualties and met a number of injured military servicemen and their families to closely check on services provided to them.

Quinn’s visit, which will run until September 15, includes talks with several government agencies, national institutions, and United Nations agencies operating in the Kingdom, to prepare a report that will serve as a UN document to be presented to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and the UN agencies concerned with this file.
