In the Arab context, Al-Watan newspaper said in its editorial that amid the first anniversary of Al-Aqsa Flood, numerous talks are taking place regarding the effectiveness of the attack carried out by Palestinian resistance factions, which has led to the situation we witness today. Any logical answer must revisit the scene that prevailed on the eve of Oct. 7, 2023, when the most extremist Zionist religious currents in Israel’s history had come to power. These currents not only reject negotiations with the Palestinians but also entirely dismiss the two-state solution, working relentlessly to Judaize the occupied West Bank, Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque.
It was not only the Israeli far-right that rejected the legitimate national rights of the Palestinians; the international community was also complicit by neglecting the issue and hesitating to take action towards resolving it in accordance with United Nations resolutions. However, the situation changed after Oct. 7, when the Palestinian cause once again returne
d to the forefront of international concern. This shift led to a development in the positions of several countries, which now assert that security approaches or military force cannot be relied upon to resolve the conflict, the newspaper added.
Al-Watan concluded its editorial by highlighting the rulings of the International Court of Justice and the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, which called for an end to the Israeli occupation, for the Palestinian people to exercise their right to self-determination, and for the evacuation of all settlers from the occupied Palestinian territories. These are major political victories that would not have been possible without operation Al-Aqsa Flood and the tremendous sacrifices of the Palestinian people, who have given so much for their homeland and freedom.
In its editorial, Al-Sharq newspaper noted that the Israeli occupation authorities continue their systematic targeting of the United Nations and its workers since the outbreak of the genocidal war th
ey are waging in Gaza. This campaign of violence has expanded regionally, with its effects now reaching Lebanon.
As part of this systematic targeting of the international organization, the Israeli entity’s army has continued to attack UN peacekeeping forces (UNIFIL) in Lebanon. Its soldiers and bases in southern Lebanon have been subjected to repeated Israeli assaults and bombardments. This continues despite growing international condemnation, including a joint statement from 40 countries denouncing the attacks on peacekeepers and calling for an immediate halt to these actions and a thorough investigation into the incidents, the newspaper noted.
The continued targeting of UN organizations by Israel also includes the decision by Israeli authorities to seize the headquarters of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in occupied East Jerusalem. This action is part of a broader and systematic campaign aimed at dismantling the agency, undermining its role and m
andate as a UN body, Al-Sharq added.
The newspaper concluded its editorial by saying that the world faces two options: either take firm actions to hold Israel accountable and compel it to respect international law, or witness the demise of international legitimacy, as trust and credibility in global institutions have been severely shaken.
