GeneralNARC's workshop provides insight on groundwater sustainability in Azraq district

The National Agricultural Research Center (NARC) on Sunday held a workshop on “Governance Tool for Sustainable Distribution of Water Resources in the Mediterranean,” which is funded by Partnership on Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA) in the Azraq region.

Addressing the participants, the project’s coordinator, Dr. Luna Hadidi, said this workshop targeted stakeholders from water providers and users, with the aim of enhancing “effective” groundwater management and maintaining sustainable water reserves by developing a user-driven GTOOI.

The tool’s main strengths are to provide a “common” framework for stakeholder cooperation and engagement to exchange information to reach the “best” groundwater management to achieve complementarity and raise the governance level in this regard to advance Jordan’s agricultural sector and achieve its sustainability, according to Hadidi.

Director of NARC’s Economic and Social Studies, Dr. Mesnat Hiyari, highlighted the importance of holding the workshop in Azraq district with the aim of studying software development to reach “safe” groundwater use to maintain “sustainable” reservoirs.

To propose solutions, challenges facing stakeholders in the Azraq area in terms of groundwater use and opportunities to cultivate salinity-tolerant crops were discussed, Hiyari pointed out.
