Najjar, UNDP official talk Jordan’s water challenges

Minister of Water, Mohammad Najjar, on Thursday, discussed with Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Sherry Anderson, and Director of UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Nabil Assaf, ways to address Jordan’s water challenges.

During the meeting, Najjar lauded UNDP’s interest in Jordan’s water sector, adding that the Kingdom is one of the largest refugee-hosting countries due to the region’s conflicts over the past years.

Najjar also referred to the UNDP’s efforts in addressing the effects of climate change and drought, which contributed to a drop in the water quantities available for drinking and agricultural purposes amid the increasing water challenges, especially the rainy seasons that Jordan witnessed during the past two years.

In addition, the minister expressed the government’s thanks for the UNDP’s support to face the “exceptional” circumstances facing the Kingdom.

For her part, Anderson affirmed the United Nations’ interest in expanding cooperation horizons with Jordan and supporting the sector’s plans to implement sustainable projects, improve water and sanitation services, and curb climate change impacts.
