Madaba’s Mukawir hosts theatrical performance on beheading of John the Baptist.

The historic village of Mukawir hosted a theatrical performance that tells the story of the beheading of John the Baptist.

In the event, organized by the Jordan Tourism Board (JTB), and attended by Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Nayef Al-Fayez, officials and big audience, Al-Fayez said, “Today we meet in Mukawir, one of the Christian pilgrimage sites, which tells the story of the Prophet Yahya, “John the Baptist”, to celebrate a long history and an ancient civilization.”

He thanked the organizers of this cultural celebration in Lebanon and held it in this religious and historical site.

The celebration, which was performed by the Lebanese performance troupe, consisting of 30 male and female artists, included a musical and theatrical performance written by Père Joseph Soueid, Patriarchal Vicar of the Saint Charbel Church in Jordan.

The performance recalls the history of the area, specially the Machaerus (Mukawir Castle), which witnessed the historical incident of the beheading of John the Baptist, Prophet Yahya bin Zakaria, peace be upon him.

This cultural event is being held in the Madaba governorate’s village of Mukawir, which is part of activities of the JTB and the Ministry of Tourism in Madaba, the capital of Arab tourism for 2022, which aims to highlight Madaba as a city famous for its archeological sites on the global, regional and local tourism map, especially as it hosts two sites of Christian religious pilgrimage, namely Mount Nebo and Mukawir.
