Kharabsheh urges Mediterranean countries to exchange green energy

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dr. Saleh Kharabsheh on Sunday, called on kicking off electrical connection between southern and eastern Mediterranean countries with the “highest solar radiation rates in the world,” and the northern Mediterranean nations to provide the latter with “clean, green” energy they seek at the “lowest possible costs.”

Delivering Jordan’s speech at the opening session of the 12th Session of the International Renewable Energy Agency Assembly (IRENA) held in Abu Dhabi, Kharabsheh stressed the need to harness opportunities, in cooperation with relevant international institutions, to proceed with development of the necessary infrastructure and legislation Which enable achieving global energy connectivity as “quickly as possible.”

During the session, which was held virtually, Kharabsheh said the shift towards green energy has become a reality that touches our daily lives and is supported by global policies, foremost are the outcomes and recommendations of the Climate Summit (COP 26) to double international commitments to reduce emissions by using all available means, especially renewable energy and energy rationalization.

The minister also stressed the importance of concerted efforts to build on what was achieved in connecting all countries worldwide to a single electrical network to facilitate transfer of green energy from nations with a high production capacity to states that aspire to use this energy, which reduces costs.

Jordan believes that time has come to move into the technology of producing and using green hydrogen produced from renewable energy sources, which is one of the most promising technologies to play a key role in reducing carbon emissions, in addition to using it as a medium for transporting and storing clean energy, according to the minister.

The Kingdom, he said, has begun preparing a map to determine the required technical and legislative steps in this field.

Jordan, he noted, is working to best utilize renewable energy sources, whether to generate electricity, as it aspires to exceed the stated goal in the comprehensive strategy for the energy sector for 2030 and reach 50% of electrical energy generated from renewable energy, or for other uses such as the use of concentrated thermal energy in industries and hospitals and various service sectors.
