Kazakhstani embassy calls on citizens to vote in referendum

Kazakhstan’s embassy in Amman on Tuesday urged Kazakhstani nationals in Jordan to vote in a national referendum to amend their country’s constitution.

In a press conference, Counsellor Baurzhan Abiyev said the embassy will open its doors on Sunday, June 5 for Kazakhstani nationals to vote in the referendum, which he said will include amendments reducing the president’s powers and providing more power to the parliament.

According to Abiyev, the amendments to his country’s constitution would push for more decentralization by giving local governments more power while also improving human rights protection procedures. He praised Jordan’s authorities for their cooperation throughout the process.

He emphasized that Kazakhstan’s strong commitment to democratic principles is reflected in the public nature of the referendum.
