Jordan and Syria Strengthen Trade Ties Through Enhanced Cooperation

Damascus: Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply, Yarub Qudah, on Thursday held talks in Damascus with Head of the Syrian General Authority for Land and Sea Ports, Qutaiba Badawi, on several economic and trade issues of mutual interest between the two countries.

According to Jordan News Agency, the meeting focused on enhancing trade exchange between Jordan and Syria, stressing their commitment to facilitating the entry of goods and products between the two countries. Both parties agreed on implementing flexible procedures to support commercial activity and ensure smooth transit.

A significant outcome of the discussions was the agreement to facilitate the passage of Jordanian trucks to Syrian ports for loading and unloading operations, while allowing Syrian trucks similar access to the Port of Aqaba. This initiative aims to strengthen integration in the transport and logistics sectors and open up broader prospects for regional trade.

The discussions also addressed the current regional conditions and the challenges they pose to transportation and trade. An agreement was reached to allow Jordanian trucks carrying goods of Jordanian origin to enter Syrian territory, and vice versa, without the need for cargo transfers at the border. This measure is intended to expedite the movement of goods and accelerate their delivery to markets.

Both parties emphasized the strategic geographic location of their countries, discussing the development of cooperation mechanisms to transform Jordan and Syria into regional hubs for cargo consolidation and re-export to Gulf and European markets. This move is expected to enhance trade activity and stimulate the transport and logistics sectors.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to maintain close coordination to address the impact of regional developments on trade movement and supply chains. This coordination aims to ensure the smooth flow of goods, secure market needs, and facilitate import and export operations in accordance with the regulations and procedures in both countries.
