Aqaba:Minister of Environment Ayman Suleiman has emphasized the necessity for enhanced regional cooperation, data and expertise sharing, and the implementation of science-based policies to combat air pollution and enhance air quality across West Asia.
According to Jordan News Agency, Suleiman made these remarks at the opening of the fourth regional meeting of the West Asia Air Quality Network. Held in Aqaba, the meeting was organized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Regional Office for West Asia and brought together experts and representatives from various countries and specialized international organizations. A capacity-building workshop is scheduled to follow on October 7-8.
Suleiman highlighted air pollution as a significant environmental and public health issue, noting that pollutants cross borders and that the region is also impacted by sand and dust storms. He pointed out the importance of the network as a platform for regional coordination, facilitating knowledge and expertise exchange, and building capacity. This effort aims to assist countries in developing more effective strategies to curb air pollution while aligning air-quality improvements with climate action and sustainable development.
Discussing Jordan's initiatives, Suleiman mentioned that the country is actively implementing policies and programs under the Economic Modernization Vision. These initiatives focus on renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable transport to reduce emissions and improve air quality. He noted that renewable energy projects constituted approximately 26.9 percent of Jordan's electricity generation mix by the end of 2024. Additionally, the Environment Ministry is advancing its air-quality monitoring system and providing reliable data to support environmental decision-making.
Suleiman reiterated Jordan's dedication to collaborating through the regional network to formulate common tools and practical solutions to air pollution challenges. He described the meeting as a chance to transform knowledge into action and set priorities for collective efforts toward cleaner air and a more sustainable environment.
The meeting's agenda includes discussions on regional cooperation concerning air quality, sharing data and best practices, addressing national and regional challenges, and exploring strategies to enhance monitoring, assessment, and capacity-building to back policies aimed at improving air quality and mitigating its environmental and health impacts.
