Health Ministry Introduces New Protocol for Asthma and COPD Management

Amman: The Ministry of Health has launched the National Clinical Practice Protocol for Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) at the primary healthcare level. The launch took place during a ceremony at the Jordanian Health Forum at the Ministry’s headquarters in recognition of World COPD Day.

According to Jordan News Agency, Secretary-General of the Health Ministry for Administrative and Technical Affairs, Ilham Khraisat, stated that the guidelines are the result of comprehensive efforts between the Ministry and its partners. These efforts aim to enhance the health sector’s ability to tackle emerging health challenges, aligning with the Economic Modernization Vision and the Ministry’s goal of providing comprehensive, high-quality healthcare.

Khraisat noted that the guidelines were developed to address an urgent need for improved treatment pathways and to minimize complications. This initiative follows a study conducted in cooperation with the World Health Organization to evaluate the current state of health services. The study focused on identifying gaps and assessing the distribution of medical personnel, particularly pulmonologists, to support healthcare decision-makers.

She further explained that creating unified national guidelines based on scientific practices and international standards is a strategic move to improve healthcare quality. This will be achieved by standardizing treatment methods, enhancing diagnostic precision, and supporting medical decision-making, ultimately benefiting patients’ health and quality of life.

Khraisat emphasized that the guidelines are part of a larger strategy by the Ministry of Health to bolster primary healthcare services, develop human resources, and ensure equitable treatment for all citizens. This includes supporting scientific research, advancing digital health systems, and expanding early detection programs.

Iman Shankiti, the World Health Organization Representative in Jordan, highlighted Jordan’s leadership in the region in strengthening chronic respiratory disease programs at the primary healthcare level. She stated that implementing these protocols will not only enhance patient outcomes but also improve system efficiency and healthcare standards. This will ensure timely access to specialized care, reduce complications, improve the patient experience, and support efforts toward universal health coverage.
