Former prime minister Hani Mulki on Tuesday was awarded the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun, the highest class Japanese decoration for foreigners.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Japanese embassy said the Government of Japan decided to confer the decoration upon Mulki in spring 2021 for his contribution in strengthening bilateral relations between Japan and Jordan.

“Mulki has greatly contributed to developing Japan-Jordan relations in different fields, including political, defense and economic aspects through his visit to Japan in 2017 and during the visit of then-Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to Jordan, during which Japan-Jordan relationship become a strategic partnership,” the statement added.

Several high-ranking officials, former ministers and current and former senators attended the ceremony at the Japanese ambassador’s residence.
