FM, Palestinian counterpart: Jerusalem is “red line”

Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi, and Palestinian counterpart, Riyad Al-Maliki, on Saturday called on the international community to take immediate and effective steps to stop the illegal and inhumane Israeli practices against the Palestinians in occupied Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque / Al-Haram Al-Qudsi Sharif.

During their talks within the framework of coordinating regional and international actions aimed at confronting Israeli practices and attacks, the two ministers held the occupation authorities responsible for the dangerous escalation in occupied Jerusalem.

Safadi and Al-Maliki said that Jerusalem and its holy sites are “a red line” and that the Israeli violations are a flagrant violation of international law and a provocation to the feelings of two billion Muslims and a crime that will fuel the conflict and push the region towards further escalation.

Safadi underlined that Jordan, under the guidance and follow-up of His Majesty King Abdullah, the custodian of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, will continue to devote all its capabilities to protecting holy sites, their Arab, Islamic and Christian identity, their historical and legal status quo and confronting Israeli attacks and violations.

Safadi and Al-Maliki said that joint work to protect the right of Palestinians in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood to their homes and prevent their deportation, will also continue.

Both officials stressed that Israel, as the occupying power, has a responsibility to protect the rights of Palestinians in their homes, and warned that deporting Palestinians from the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood from their homes constitutes a war crime, in violation of international humanitarian law, the Geneva Convention and the Hague Convention.

The two ministers discussed preparations for the urgent conference of Arab foreign ministers next week to discuss the situation in Jerusalem, and emphasized the continuation of coordination and joint action regionally and internationally to confront Israeli violations and protect the Palestinian people and their rights, especially their right to their independent and sovereign state on the pre-June 4, 1967 borders, with occupied Jerusalem as its capital.
