FM, Italian counterpart hold round of strategic dialogue, 1st add

Safadi underlined the importance of consolidating the truce by the reconstruction process in Gaza through the Palestinian National Authority, respecting the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem and its holy sites, halting settlements and confiscating lands, and stopping displacing Palestinians in Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, Silwan and the entire occupied state of Palestine from their homes.

Safadi valued Italy’s support for the two-state solution and its role in efforts to reach a just peace, and its support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

Safadi and Di Maio agreed to maintain coordination and work with partners and friends in order to find a political horizon to achieve peace and stabilize the truce.

In the context of regional talks, the two sides also agreed that there is no alternative to a political solution as a way to solve the Syrian crisis, and they highlighted efforts exerted to reach this solution.

During the talks, Safadi briefed his Italian counterpart on efforts and contacts that the Kingdom is making in order to achieve the required progress in efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis.

He stressed the need to continue the required international support for refugees, and provide them with a decent living and meet their needs which should be a common international responsibility, not just the responsibility of host countries.

Safadi underscored that the political solution that Jordan is working to accelerate reaching it the priority of which must be protecting Syria and the Syrian people, preserve Syria’s unity and cohesion, restore its security and stability, eliminate terrorism, respect its sovereignty and create conditions that allow for the voluntary return of refugees.
