Extraordinary Arab Summit Kicks Off in Cairo with Focus on Gaza Reconstruction

Cairo: Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas praised the Egyptian plan for rebuilding the Gaza Strip, emphasizing that it aims to keep Palestinians on their homeland without displacement. He stated that the summit is being held amid serious challenges threatening the Palestinian cause, particularly calls for the displacement of Palestinians from their land.

According to Jordan News Agency, President Abbas strongly rejected the calls, reiterating his commitment to safeguarding Palestinian rights. Abbas condemned Israel’s actions in imposing a colonial settlement reality in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, which he argued are aimed at undermining the two-state solution and erasing the Palestinian cause.

Abbas outlined the Palestinian vision to address the challenges Palestinians face, which focuses on empowering the State of Palestine to fulfill its duties in Gaza through government institutions. He reiterated support for the Egyptian plan to rebuild Gaza, continuing efforts to implement the government’s reform and development programme and increasing efforts to strengthen Palestinian national unity.

President Abbas expressed readiness to hold general elections – presidential and legislative – within the coming year, provided the appropriate conditions are met in Gaza, the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. He noted that the Palestinian Authority is working on restructuring leadership frameworks and plans to convene the Palestinian Central Council.
